Dry Needling

12th March 2019 / Uncategorised

In a growing industry of new treatment methods developing to enhance injury recovery, Charlotte Long has recently completed a Dry Needling course to help build and develop her practice at Sportsmed East.

Dry needling is becoming a popular treatment method for musculoskeletal injuries and uses thin filiform needles that penetrate the skin, muscles and connective tissue (myofascial connective tissue) to change the body’s physiology and mechanical response. Within clinical practice, Physiotherapists, Osteopaths and Sports Therapist see a large number of patients present daily with pain that mainly arises from the musculoskeletal system. The dry needling technique aims to release an active trigger point that causes pain. Once the active trigger point has been deactivated and pain has settled, a simple stretching programme can be designed to promote recovery and prevent future episodes of muscular tightness.

What are active trigger points?

An active myofascial trigger point (MTrp) is a hypersensitive region within the muscle of the musculoskeletal system, which is characterised by localised or persistent muscular pain. A good example of a common MTrp encountered by many patients can be found in the shoulders, known as the trapezius muscle. This is usually noticed if you have stood outside for a long period of time in the freezing cold with your shoulder up by your ears to keep warm!

What to look out for in an active trigger point

  • Muscular pain that is consistent and refers to other regions of the body
  • Muscular pain that arises from acute and chronic overload or repetitive movement
  • Active trigger points that cause muscle weakness and limit range of motion

If any of these symptoms sound familiar to you, and you are fed up of the dull nagging muscular pain, please contact us as dry needling may work for you.
