Pilates

  • Led by: Mary George
  • Day: Thursday (morning) and Tuesday (evening)
  • Time: Time: 09:30 - 10.25 and 19:15 - 20.10
  • Location: Gym

The aim of Pilates is to improve core stability and flexibility. Sessions are designed to be safe and effective consisting of a warm-up, exercises to improve core strength, joint flexibility and postural control and will end with a cool down.

Pilates classes at Sportsmed East are run by, Mary George, a qualified Physiotherapist

There are 5 key elements to Clinical Pilates:

  • Breathing
  • Centering – to include abdominal muscles OR pelvic floor muscles
  • Rib Cage Placement
  • Shoulder Blade Placement
  • Head and Neck Placement

All exercises will commence at a low level and will be progressed appropriately according to participants’ fitness levels. Sessions may be stopped/modified if they appear to be causing excessive fatigue or strain.

Information for Women Only: Pilates is not advised between weeks 8 and 14 of pregnancy. It is also not recommended until 6 weeks postnatally.

Information for all: Pilates involves the physiotherapy instructors giving hands-on correction of postures
